Kidepo National Park

Description

Kidepo Valley National Park lies in Uganda’s remote north-eastern tip, in the Karamoja region near the borders with South Sudan and Kenya. Covering about 1,442 km², the park is recognised for its rugged savannahs, sweeping plains, seasonal rivers and mountain backdrops.

The terrain is dominated by two main valleys — the Kidepo and Narus — and flanked by the Morungole Mountains rising to roughly 2,750 m above sea level. This landscape, combined with the semi-arid climate, gives the park a distinct sense of wilderness and openness.

Wildlife highlights: large herds of buffalo, elephants, lions; Uganda’s only wild ostriches; many antelope species.

Why Visit Kidepo National Park

  • The park is one of Uganda’s most remote and least visited national parks, which contributes to its sense of pristine wilderness.
  • It supports a rich diversity of wildlife, including over 77 mammal species and about 475 bird species (depending on facts source), making it a strong draw for both safari-goers and bird-watchers.
  • Because of the sparse vegetation during the dry months, it offers excellent wildlife-viewing opportunities, particularly in valleys like Narus where animals gather around remaining water sources.
  • The cultural dimension is significant: the park sits in a region home to indigenous communities such as the Karamojong, whose traditions add a unique human landscape to the natural features.
