With elevations spanning roughly 1,160 m to 2,600 m, the park encompasses steep ridges, deep valleys and a dense forest that has persisted for tens of thousands of years — a factor that contributes to its exceptional biodiversity.

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is internationally renowned for harbouring nearly half of the world’s remaining population of critically endangered mountain gorillas.
